ALTERED EARTH

ALTERED EARTH – is a 21st century Earthwork. This multimedia work is described by Doug Aitken as “a series of moments and fragments of time focusing on the geography of the Camargue”, which provides “an almost holographic view of the physical landscape.” The work exists through moving images, sound and architecture, exploring the ever-changing landscape. It is a work of Land art for the electronic era. The installation of ALTERED EARTH creates a form of liquid architecture out of large scale moving images where the viewer explores a labyrinth of synchronized moving images, which explore new definitions of time and place.

The artwork is conceived as a truly connected multimedia experience. As the work produces its own architecture, and, by extension, its own landscape, Doug Aitken has also developed a form for ALTERED EARTH, through which the work might “reconfigure itself architecturally and its content can continuously shift.” It was this thinking that led to the conception of the digital application ALTERED EARTH, as a means by which the spectator can interact with this landscape and “have a new dialogue with it, each time they encounter it “.
A new, updated version of the app will be available during the exhibition and visitors are invited to experiment with it.

ALTERED EARTH will be projected as a freestanding installation in the Grande Halle of the Parc des Ateliers in Arles, France. The installation will consist of
12 screens measuring 8.5m by 4.78m, suspended 60cm from the ground. Through this medium of multi-screen video, ALTERED EARTH immerses the visitor in a world of moving images, offering a unique experience of strolling through a new form of landscape.
Doug Aitken’s work, commissioned and produced by the LUMA Foundation as the foundation started to think of the development of the Parc des Ateliers in Arles- the capital city of the Camargue- is unique and is intrinsically linked to the region. The artist wanted the work to remain anchored in its original surroundings and be site-specific. For this reason, the work will not be re-edited and the exhibition “will not travel outside the landscape in which it was born. The work is conceived from the DNA of the Camargue landscape and will only ever physically exist there.”
ALTERED EARTH- Arles, a city of moving images was first projected onto a purpose-built transparent screen placed on Place de la République in Arles in July 2011 during the opening of the Rencontres internationales de la Photographie. A second stage of this piece took place in London at the Serpentine Gallery in October 2011, where the ALTERED EARTH App was launched. For its third manifestation, the exhibition is housed in the Grande Halle which is one of the existing buildings in the Parc des Ateliers where the LUMA Foundation is planning a new center for production of ideas, art and exhibitions.

Arles, city of moving images s'attache autant à la région d'Arles et de la Camargue, qu'à la découverte d'une nouvelle expression du monde physique, distincte du présent. L'application permet au spectateur de naviguer directement d'un support à un autre, de visionner films, textes, graphiques, documents de recherche, installations et musique. Ce faisant, ALTERED EARTH étend la notion de « lieu » à un univers numérique sans limites, tout en essayant de proposer une forme artistique entièrement nouvelle.

« Ce projet de Doug Aitken touche à certaines questions essentielles de notre époque, relatives à l'art et l'ère du numérique. Il matérialise une tension entre son statut de projet conçu pour un site, en l'occurrence la Camargue d'une part, et l'ubiquité de son application en téléchargement libre d'autre part. Il dépasse les frontières du documentaire et de la fiction et instaure une nouvelle forme de narration interactive. Avec sa première œuvre d'art pour smart-phone ou iPad, Doug Aitken se fait pionnier d'un nouveau territoire : celui de l'espace d'exposition. »

Depuis les années 1990, Doug Aitken a, à travers son œuvre, ouvert le champ des possibilités de l'expérience non linéaire en abordant la question des environnements immersifs. L'application ALTERED EARTH: Arles, city of moving images permettra d'expérimenter de nouvelles pistes en matière de contenu artistique.

Commandée et produite par la Fondation LUMA pour le Parc des Ateliers et développée en partenariat avec MERI Media, éditeur numérique maintes fois récompensé, avec le graphiste Peter Crnokrak et INABA, cabinet multidisciplinaire d'information sur l'architecture, l'application ALTERED EARTH propose un territoire d'un nouveau genre. Téléchargeable depuis n'importe où, elle ajoute à l'expression « in-situ » une nouvelle dimension qui reflète notre rapport à la géographie locale et internationale à l'ère du numérique. Les textes d'auteurs reconnus Hans Ulrich Obrist, Sasha Frere-Jones et Lars Bang Larsen explorent les relations entre film/image en mouvement, architecture, land art, nouveaux médias, recherche originale et fiction/narration. Les musiciens White Rainbow, Lichens, Steve Roden, entre autres, ont contribué à la partition originale de ce projet.

C'est là la deuxième étape du projet Arles, city of moving images. Dans un premier temps, l'œuvre avait été projetée, Place de la République à Arles, sur un écran de verre installé à l'occasion du programme d'été 2011 de la fondation LUMA pendant les Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles. Une troisième manifestation, une installation de douze écrans spécialement conçue pour le site de la Grande Halle du Parc des Ateliers à Arles, est programmée pour le printemps 2012. Cet événement participe d'un processus entrepris pour développer ce qui deviendra un modèle culturel pour la première partie du XXIe siècle.
